RHS Hampton Court  "Subaru Cocoon" Garden

I was commissioned to photograph the Subaru Cocoon garden at RHS Hampton Court, designed by Mike McMahon and Jewlsy Mathews of Mike McMahon Studio and built by Big Fish Landscapes.

Inspired by the UK and Ireland’s vanishing temperate rainforests, the garden features a planting scheme of exclusively native species. Eleven types of fern and interplanted with Silver Birch, Scots Pine, mosses, and woodland flora — all enclosed within a stunning curved brick jail wall, a traditional Indian screen that filters light and offers privacy. Constructed using highly sustainable Kenoteq K-Briqs, the wall doubles as a thriving insect habitat: by laying the bricks on their side, the core holes in the brick form nesting spaces for invertebrates, enhancing the garden’s biodiversity.

The team won multiple awards, including:Gold Medal, Best Show Garden, Best Construction of a Show Garden, RHS Environmental Innovation Award & Tudor Rose Award.
